What are all these taxes and fees?

We like to be up front so we want to make sure that all our taxes and fees are clearly displayed and defined for you. With that said, there is one state tax and one state fee to be paid when purchasing eve insurance.

Surplus lines tax

Most states charge taxes on the sale of insurance. Because eve insurance is delivered as surplus lines, we declare the tax separately from the premium as part of your quote.

Surplus lines tax is usually between 1-6% of the premium charged, depending on which state your company is domiciled in.

Stamping fees

Time for a brief history lesson.

Once upon a time, surplus line insurance documents were physically stamped with ink to indicate that the customer was aware they bought a surplus lines insurance policy. The good news, computers replaced the need for a physical stamp; the bad news, the fee remains in some states to cover administrative costs.

Stamping fees also vary by state but are usually between 0-3%, with the exception of Pennsylvania and Oregan, which charge a flat rate of $20 and $10 respectively.

Who sets the taxes and fees?

Taxes and fees are determined by the Insurance Office of the respective state; however, in a few cases it's done by a separate office, such as the Surplus Lines and Stamping Office of Texas or the Florida Surplus Lines Service Office.

They are set every few years but can change more frequently in response to economic conditions.

So how much is it?

As a customer you are charged the tax and fee for the state in which your company is domiciled. If you have an event in Florida but your company is Located in California, you will be charged the California tax and fee.
